by Fallen Fruit
(David Burns, Matias Viegener, and Austin Young)
Rather than look at fruit trees as simply a source of food, Public Fruit Theater examines the tree in its totality as a durational performance. Viewers complete the story through observation, witnessing the trees’ leafing out, blooming, and ripening fruit. Broken concrete references the margins of the city, the often unwalked sidewalks that connect us and separate us. The tree is at the center, but it’s less clear who the actor is. Do we watch the tree’s performance or do we observe ourselves watching it? The tree grows in every direction; it has no front or back but it addresses everybody.
